India Unshaken As Trump Pressures Apple To Relocate iPhone Production To The US

| Updated: May 16, 2025 12:15

India has exercised restraint following US President Donald Trump’s remarks suggesting that Apple shift iPhone production from India to the United States.

Government officials highlighted that India has evolved into a consistent and credible player in the global mobile market under the Make in India initiative. The government is upbeat about companies realising the strategic value of operating in India — it is confident that businesses.

Trump’s remarks, made earlier this week in Doha, were pointed. He implied that Apple should prioritise production within the US. He also claimed that Apple would boost domestic production following his conversation with CEO Tim Cook, though he offered no concrete details.

Despite these statements, Apple has not issued any public response. However, Indian officials have reportedly engaged with Apple’s executives following the incident. The company has reassured the Indian government that its investment and manufacturing plans in the country remain unchanged. India continues to hold a central role in Apple’s global supply chain.

The numbers underline India’s rising prominence in smartphone manufacturing. Approximately 40 million iPhones—about 15% of Apple’s annual global output—are now assembled in India. The bulk of this work is carried out by Taiwanese firms Foxconn and Pegatron. Tata Electronics, which recently took over Pegatron’s India operations, is also scaling up its production facilities.

Between April 2024 and March 2025, iPhones worth roughly $22 billion were assembled in India, marking a 60% year-on-year increase, according to reports. Most of these units are destined for export, particularly to the United States. In March alone, over 3 million iPhones were shipped from India to the US, comprising nearly 98% of Apple’s monthly exports, as per S&P Global Market Intelligence.

India’s role in Apple’s supply chain continues to expand, with Foxconn initiating AirPods production in Telangana exclusively for export markets.

Beyond manufacturing, Apple’s ecosystem has become a significant employment generator. According to reports, the company and its network of suppliers have created close to two lakh jobs in India. The country’s deepening talent pool and advanced supply chain capabilities for precision electronics have helped establish it as a preferred base for high-tech assembly.

India’s smartphone exports are witnessing consistent growth. In FY25, iPhones worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore were exported, according to an announcement last month by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This surge further cements India’s standing as a key player in global electronics exports.

At the macro level, India-US trade relations remain strong. Bilateral trade in 2024 reached $129 billion, although India maintains a trade surplus of over $45 billion—a recurring concern for the Trump administration.
