Indian Railways: Carrying Excess Luggage Will Cost More

| Updated: June 2, 2022 19:11

When it comes to commutation preference, Indian Railways has always been people’s first choice. One of the reason for it is that people get to carry as much luggage as they want, which is quite difficult to do in flights. There were no rules regarding the limitation on weight of the luggage that a person can carry with him earlier. However, things will change now. Railways has now set new rules, which might be hard on those who struggle to travel light.

On May 29, the Indian Railway Ministry announced new rules regarding the weight of luggage allowed aboard trains. Through its Twitter account, the ministry said, “If there is more luggage, then the joy of the journey will be half!” In the further message, it advised passengers that in case of extra luggage one can book their bags and suitcases with the parcel office.

One of the railway officers said that many passengers travel with excess luggage even after having set the limitation. This creates problems for others. The railways had to take this extreme step because of a large number of chain pulling cases. As per a report, “332 alarm chain pulling cases were registered in the month of April in Mumbai division. Out of which only 53 cases were justified.” The officer confirmed that due to excess luggage, passengers take more time to board the trains, leading to a further increase in chain pulling cases.

According to the rules of Railways, the limitation of luggage depends on the type of coach one is travelling in. For passengers in AC Chair Car and AC 3 Tier, 40 kg luggage is allowed, while passengers in 2nd AC coaches can carry up to 50 kg. 1st Class passengers are allowed to carry up to 70 kg in luggage. General passengers are limited to only 35 kg of luggage.

The Railway Ministry has warned that if any passenger is found carrying extra luggage they will be fined.
