A federal judge in the United States has ordered the release of a handwritten document described as a suicide note allegedly written by late financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, reviving global attention around one of the most controversial deaths in recent American criminal history.
The note, which includes the line, “It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye,” was unsealed by U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas after a request by The New York Times, which had first reported its existence last week.
Epstein was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell on August 10, 2019, while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges involving underage girls. His death was officially ruled a suicide by hanging, but the circumstances surrounding it have remained the subject of intense speculation, conspiracy theories and criticism of the US prison system.
The newly released handwritten note was reportedly discovered by Epstein’s former jail cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, who later submitted it through lawyers during proceedings connected to his own criminal case. Tartaglione is currently serving four consecutive life sentences for drug-related murders.
Judge Karas ruled that the document qualified as a judicial record and therefore fell under the public’s right to access court-related materials. However, the judge did not authenticate the note or verify whether Epstein actually wrote it. He stated that questions surrounding authenticity and chain of custody were irrelevant to the decision on whether the note should remain sealed.
The note, written on a yellow legal pad, contains several emotionally charged lines. One portion states: “They investigated me for month – Found NOTHING!!! So 15 year old charges resulted.” Another line reads: “Watcha want me to do – Burst out cryin!! NO FUN – NOT WORTH IT!!”
The note reportedly surfaced after an earlier July 2019 incident in which Epstein was found injured in his jail cell with marks on his neck in what authorities later described as an apparent suicide attempt. According to Tartaglione’s later public statements, the note had allegedly been hidden inside a book in their shared cell.
Who Was Jeffrey Epstein?
Epstein was a wealthy American financier who cultivated close relationships with some of the world’s most influential political leaders, billionaires, academics, royalty and celebrities. Over the years, his social circle reportedly included former US presidents, global business figures, Hollywood personalities and members of elite institutions.
Despite presenting himself as a financial adviser and philanthropist, Epstein’s reputation collapsed after multiple allegations emerged accusing him of operating a sophisticated sex trafficking network involving underage girls. Prosecutors alleged that he recruited vulnerable teenage girls, often from financially weak backgrounds, and sexually exploited them at properties in New York, Florida, the US Virgin Islands and elsewhere.
His first major criminal case ended in 2008 with a highly controversial plea deal in Florida that allowed him to avoid federal prosecution and serve a short jail sentence despite serious allegations involving minors. That agreement later became a symbol of how wealth and influence allegedly helped powerful individuals escape meaningful punishment in the American justice system.
Indian Political Controversy and Hardeep Puri Row
The Epstein controversy also briefly entered Indian politics after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised questions regarding Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and his reported interactions with Epstein during Puri’s diplomatic and international policy engagements in New York.
Documents released in the United States reportedly referred to email exchanges and meetings involving Puri during his association with the International Peace Institute. Opposition leaders alleged there had been multiple meetings and dozens of email exchanges between the two men between 2014 and 2017.
Puri acknowledged meeting Epstein “three or four times” in professional settings connected to multilateral discussions and policy work but categorically denied any wrongdoing, personal association or knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities. Government sources later stated that an internal review found no evidence of illegal conduct or inappropriate links involving the minister.
The issue escalated politically after social media speculation attempted to draw broader conclusions from the reported contacts. Puri and his family strongly rejected the allegations as defamatory and politically motivated. The controversy later reached the Delhi High Court after legal action was initiated seeking removal of online posts linking members of his family to Epstein.
In India, the Epstein scandal attracted intense attention not because of direct criminal allegations against Indian leaders, but because the case became symbolic of how wealthy and globally connected elites allegedly operated with extraordinary influence and protection across countries and institutions.
Epstein’s 2019 arrest had dramatically revived scrutiny of his activities and his extensive network of wealthy associates. Prosecutors accused him of recruiting and abusing underage girls over several years in New York and Florida.
His death triggered enormous controversy partly because of multiple irregularities reported inside the Manhattan federal jail on the night he died. Investigations later revealed allegations that prison guards had fallen asleep, falsified records and failed to carry out mandatory inmate checks. Some surveillance cameras also reportedly malfunctioned or produced unusable footage.
Questions also intensified because Epstein had previously been placed on suicide watch after the earlier July jail incident but was later removed from heightened monitoring before his death.
The newly unsealed note has drawn further attention because, according to reports by The New York Times, the document was apparently never reviewed by federal investigators and did not appear among the millions of Epstein-related files publicly released by the US Justice Department in recent years.
Judge Karas rejected arguments that privacy concerns justified continued secrecy surrounding the note, observing that Epstein is deceased and that the purported note had already become widely discussed publicly.
Nearly seven years after Epstein’s death, the scandal continues to reverberate through American political, legal and media circles because of the enduring mystery surrounding how one of the world’s most notorious accused sex traffickers died while awaiting trial under federal custody.
