Health authorities across multiple countries are scrambling to trace passengers and crew linked to a luxury cruise ship after a deadly hantavirus outbreak onboard left at least three people dead and triggered an international public health alert.
The outbreak occurred aboard the Dutch expedition cruise vessel MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, during a voyage that began in South America and is now nearing Europe.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), five confirmed hantavirus cases have so far been identified, including three fatalities.
The WHO, however, stressed that the outbreak is not comparable to the early stages of Covid-19 because this particular hantavirus strain is not believed to spread easily through casual contact.
Officials said transmission primarily occurs through “close, intimate contact” or exposure to infected bodily fluids and contaminated environments.
Worldwide Contact-Tracing Operation Underway
The situation has nevertheless triggered a large-scale international contact-tracing exercise because passengers from dozens of countries had already disembarked before the outbreak was confirmed.
The cruise operator said 114 guests and 61 crew members from 22 countries were onboard the vessel during the affected voyage.
Complicating matters further, 32 passengers disembarked at the remote British territory of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic on April 24 before authorities became aware of the outbreak.
Public health agencies are now attempting to identify, locate and monitor everyone who may have come into close contact with infected individuals since leaving the ship.
The WHO warned that additional cases may still emerge because hantavirus infections can have an incubation period of up to six weeks.
That means infected individuals may not yet show symptoms despite already travelling onward to multiple countries.
Journey From Antarctica to Europe
The MV Hondius began its journey on April 1 from Ushuaia — often called the southernmost city in the world and a major gateway for Antarctic tourism.
The ship conducted an expedition-style voyage through Antarctic and South Atlantic regions before heading northward toward Europe.
The vessel is currently expected to arrive in the Canary Islands on May 10.
Cruise industry observers say the case highlights the growing public health risks associated with long-duration international cruises involving passengers from numerous countries and remote destinations with limited medical infrastructure.
What Is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially deadly viral disease primarily spread through contact with infected rodent urine, droppings or saliva.
In some cases, certain strains can also spread between humans through prolonged close contact.
Symptoms often begin with fever, fatigue, muscle pain and headaches before progressing to respiratory complications in severe cases.
Some hantavirus strains can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a life-threatening respiratory illness with high fatality rates.
Because early symptoms resemble influenza or other viral infections, diagnosis can be delayed until patients develop more serious complications.
Why Authorities Are Concerned
Although WHO officials say the outbreak is unlikely to evolve into a pandemic-scale event, authorities remain concerned because of the international mobility of cruise passengers.
Cruise ships have repeatedly emerged as high-risk environments for infectious disease transmission due to close living quarters, shared facilities and rapid international travel.
The outbreak has also revived memories of the Covid-19 pandemic, when several cruise vessels became floating hotspots during the early months of 2020.
However, experts stress that hantavirus behaves very differently from highly airborne respiratory viruses like Covid-19.
Health authorities in several countries are now advising recent passengers and close contacts to monitor symptoms, seek medical attention if necessary and cooperate with public health surveillance efforts.
Officials are also investigating how the virus may have been introduced onboard, including the possibility of rodent exposure during earlier parts of the voyage or at port locations visited during the expedition.
