Torrent Gas on Wednesday said that in an unfortunate incident in Junagadh, an underground 90 mm medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) gas pipeline of theirs was inadvertently damaged, during excavation work being carried out by a JCB on behalf of the Junagadh Municipal Corporation.
In a statement, Torrent Gas said that this caused gas to leak, which caught fire from a nearby open fire at a fast-food stall which also had LPG cylinder resulting in three fatalities and one serious burn injury.
The incident occurred around 10.27 AM near RTO Booth, Zanzarda Chowkdi, Junagadh.
The affected pipeline section was immediately isolated by closing both upstream and downstream valves, Torrent Gas said, adding that the fire was extinguished within 25 minutes.
Torrent Gas said it was not informed about the digging being carried out as per the Dial before Dig procedure. It said that they are cooperating fully with the Junagadh Municipal Corporation and all relevant authorities in a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause and sequence of events leading to this incident.
