Kanbha Case: Another Fatherly Figure, Another Flesh-Trade Victim

| Updated: May 26, 2023 15:15

The lid is blowing off the Kanbha human trafficking case as more revelations come to the fore. Vibes of India earlier highlighted how a 14-year-old orphaned, gullible girl was coerced into human smuggling racket by someone she considered a fatherly figure.

Now, it has come to light that another girl of the same age was abducted from the Shahibaug area by the prime accused named Ashok Patel. This girl has a learning disability and reportedly couldn’t articulate her thoughts — it’s likely that the perpetrators of this horrific crime took maximum advantage of her limitations.

Patel reportedly enticed her with a silver anklet. Just like what happened with the other girl, he had her believe he was like her father.

“The girl with disabilities was abducted from Shahibaug around a year ago and was sold to a man from Dasada in Surendranagar. We have rescued her and handed her over to her family,” an officer of Ahmedabad Rural police told a national daily.

The girl’s uncle said the family approached the Shahibaug police after she was untraceable. He revealed they got her back a year later when the police were probing the Kanbha case. “She was tortured, raped repeatedly by several men and later sold in marriage,” he said.

“She could not speak or communicate properly. She could not adapt to the culture and lifestyle of the family where she was sold,” he said, adding that her in-laws, unable to accept the way she was, subjected her to brutalities.

A police officer told the daily that girls from less-privileged communities were easy targets for human traffickers.
