Fearing arrest, Malini Patel, the wife of conman Kiran Patel, who was arrested in Srinagar while posing as a top official in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), has approached the city sessions court for anticipatory bail. An FIR was registered against the couple last week.
She approached the court for legal protection after one Jagdish Chavda, the brother of BJP leader Jawahar Chavda, lodged a complaint with the city crime branch accusing the duo of duping him.
He alleged that the Patels illegally occupied his bungalow worth Rs 15 crore after claiming that they would pay the money as Kiran Patel was awaiting payment for a project from a leading corporate house.
In his FIR, Chavda alleged that Patel introduced himself as a Class-I officer of the PMO, a partner in Tea Post chain and a real estate broker. He told Chavda he would sell off the bungalow after renovation. This happened in February 2022, and in August 2022, Chavda received a notice from the Ahmedabad district court regarding a suit filed against him by Patel, alleging illegal possession of the bungalow.
Malini has claimed that since she is the mainstay of her family and the sole breadwinner, her family members will starve if she is not granted any legal protection. She stated that she is employed and shoulders the complete responsibility of the family and so there was no possibility of her fleeing from justice.
Pleading innocence, she further stated that she had nothing to do with the alleged crime. She is afraid of being falsely implicated in the case and therefore approached the court for legal protection, she claimed.
The court is likely to hear the anticipatory bail plea soon.
