Surat, Gujarat: A construction worker from Telangana allegedly killed his wife and 7-year-old son before dying by suicide in their Surat residence on Friday morning.
The deceased, identified as 38-year-old Somesh Bhikshapatti Jilla, sent a selfie to his brother just before hanging himself, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police J T Sonara. Police also found videos on Somesh’s phone believed to be recordings of the killings.
The bodies of Somesh, his wife Nirmala (32), and their son Rushi were discovered in their home in Limbayat’s Rustam Park society. Investigators believe Somesh poisoned his son and then strangled his wife.
A suicide note written in Hindi mentioned debts owed to a construction firm owner and a friend, totaling approximately Rs 13,000. However, police say there is no initial indication of financial strain on the family.
Somesh’s brother, Nagesh Jilla, informed authorities after receiving the selfie at 7 am and finding Somesh’s door locked.
In another video, Somesh reportedly requested his bodies be donated for medical research. He also spoke of feeling isolated due to a strained relationship with his brother, who allegedly cut off contact, and not being informed of his father’s funeral in Telangana in 2020.
The motive for the killings remains unclear. Police are examining phone records and messages retrieved from a note left by Somesh, which included passwords, a phone number, and a message to his brother expressing hurt feelings. A message to his mother-in-law simply said “sorry Amma.”
The investigation is ongoing.
