The Mumbai Indians'(MI) ownership assigned worldwide positions to the Head Coach, Mahela Jayawardene and Director of Cricket Operations, Zaheer Khan saying that the organisation sought to build a core team on a global scale. The Mumbai Indians have expanded their ownership to include two other teams, MI Emirates and MI Cape Town. Khan will be the new Global Head of Cricket Development for MI’s three clubs, while Jayawardene will serve as the franchise’s Global Head of Performance. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians will have a new head coach for the Indian Premier League, the franchise said in a statement.
The statement further said, “with the expansion of Mumbai Indians One Family which now includes the MI Emirates and MI Cape Town along with the Mumbai Indians, the management recognized the need for a central team. This would ensure consistency across the ‘One family of teams’, on ethos, values and learning, that have made MI one of the most loved cricket brands across the globe.”
It also clarified the veteran cricketers’ new roles. Mahela Jayawardene has been appointed as the Global Head of Performance, MI, providing senior leadership of the group’s cricket operations, globally. This includes complete strategic planning, the development of an integrated global high-performance eco-system and the responsibility for each team’s coaching and support structures.
Khan has been tasked with “players development, building MI’s robust programme around talent identification and grooming and implementing the same across countries, which has been fundamental to MI’s philosophy and success.”
Both the individuals congratulated the team owners after being promoted to their new positions. Reliance Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash Ambani expressed his delight at Mahela and Zaheer joining MI’s global core team.
Jayawardene and Khan have been two of the most crucial players in the organization’s success in the IPL. In 2017, Jayawardene was hired as the team’s head coach and assisted the Rohit Sharma-led team in winning three IPL championships. Khan joined the team in 2018 and gave the franchise his essential support.
The two new teams, MI Emirates and MI Cape Town will participate in the SA20 League and the International T20 League of the United Arab Emirates, respectively. The competitions are expected to start in 2023.
