Mumbai Indians Secure Four Players at WPL 2025 Auction; Nita Ambani Expresses Delight

| Updated: December 17, 2024 12:41

Mumbai Indians (MI) owner, Nita Ambani, has expressed her satisfaction with the team’s successful business during Sunday’s 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction. The franchise spent Rs 2.2 crore to sign four players—G Kamalini, Nadine de Klerk, Sanskriti Gupta and Akshita Maheshwari—completing their 18-member squad.

The highlight of MI’s purchases was young Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batter G Kamalini, who fetched Rs 1.60 crore in a heated bidding war with the Delhi Capitals. Kamalini now stands as the joint fourth-highest-paid player in the MI squad. The other three players—South African all-rounder Nadine de Klerk, Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Sanskriti Gupta and Rajasthan pacer Akshita Maheshwari—were acquired at their base prices.

Speaking after the auction, Ambani expressed her pride in the new additions. “We are all very happy and satisfied with the team we have assembled today,” she said. “Auctions are exciting and emotional at the same time. I am so proud of all the girls who have participated in the auction today and all the girls who have now become part of the Mumbai Indians family: G Kamalini, Nadine de Klerk, Sanskriti Gupta and Akshita Maheshwari.”

Welcoming the players, Ambani reflected on MI’s legacy of developing young talent, pointing to the success stories of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Tilak Verma from the men’s team.

“We warmly welcome you to the Mumbai Indians family. Mumbai Indians has always tried to scout, nurture, and develop young talent. We have done this with our men’s team, and it is a proud feeling to see Bumrah, Hardik, and now Tilak representing India on the global stage. We are trying to do the same thing with our girls too. Last year, we picked Sajana up in the auction. It’s wonderful to see her now playing for Team India,” she added.

Ambani also shared her excitement about Kamalini, who scored an unbeaten 44 runs against Pakistan in the Under-19 Women’s T20 Asia Cup on the day of the auction.

“This year we are very excited about the 16-year-old Kamalini. Our scouts have been tracking her for some time, and she is a very exciting new talent to look out for. So, in all, a satisfying day at the auction,” Ambani said.
