In one of the biggest examination controversies in recent years, the National Testing Agency (NTA) on Tuesday cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3 after allegations of a question paper leak and findings shared by law enforcement agencies. The exam will now be held again on fresh dates to be announced later.
The decision, approved by the Government of India, affects lakhs of medical aspirants across the country and has triggered protests by student organisations, including demonstrations near the Union Education Ministry headquarters in Delhi.
According to the NTA, inputs examined in coordination with central agencies and investigative findings indicated that the integrity of the examination process had been compromised and “could not be allowed to stand.” The Centre has also handed over the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a comprehensive probe.
The agency said all candidate data and chosen exam centres from the May cycle will be carried forward for the re-test. No fresh registration will be required and no additional fee will be charged. Existing examination fees will also be refunded.
Why The Cancellation Matters
The cancellation of a nationwide entrance exam after it has already been conducted remains extremely rare in India because of the scale involved. NEET-UG is the single largest medical entrance examination in the country and determines admission to MBBS, BDS and other undergraduate medical courses.
This is also the latest in a series of examination-related controversies that have raised concerns over the credibility and security of competitive exams in India.
When Have Major Exams Been Cancelled Earlier?
India has seen several large-scale exam cancellations or re-conducts in the past due to paper leaks, cheating allegations or administrative failures:
- NEET-UG 2015: The Supreme Court cancelled the AIPMT (All India Pre-Medical Test), predecessor to NEET, after a massive cheating and impersonation racket was uncovered. The exam had to be reconducted nationwide.
- UP Police Recruitment Exam 2024: The Uttar Pradesh government cancelled the constable recruitment examination affecting nearly 48 lakh candidates after allegations of a paper leak surfaced.
- UGC-NET 2024: The Centre cancelled the UGC-NET examination a day after it was conducted following inputs suggesting the paper may have been compromised.
- Bihar Teacher Recruitment & SSC Exams: Multiple state-level recruitment examinations in Bihar and other states have faced cancellation or re-tests over leak allegations in recent years.
- CBSE Board Paper Leak 2018: CBSE ordered re-examinations for Class 10 Mathematics and Class 12 Economics papers after leaks surfaced on social media.
Protests And Political Fallout
Student groups and opposition parties have criticised the repeated exam leak controversies, questioning the credibility of national testing systems and demanding accountability from authorities.
The NSUI, student wing of the Congress, staged protests in Delhi accusing the government and NTA of failing to protect the sanctity of one of the country’s most important examinations.
Meanwhile, anxious students and parents now face renewed uncertainty, with lakhs having to prepare once again for a re-conducted examination amid mounting stress and confusion.
The NTA has advised candidates to rely only on official announcements for updates regarding revised exam dates and admit cards, warning against misinformation circulating on social media.
