The much awaited cabinet expansion in Gujarat is over and now it is time for MLAs to move into new flats. The state has an assembly strength of 182.
Yes, you heard it right. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to visit Gujarat later this week and the grapevine is that he will inaugurate new flats for the MLAs constructed at a cost of Rs 220 crore in Gandhinagar.
The new flats do not look less than a star hotel. And guess what? The MLAs will pay a symbolic monthly rent of Rs 37.50, less than a pouch of milk.
Spread over 2,8576 square metres, the complex has nine-storied 12 towers. According to information, each flat measures 204 square metres.
The flat has three bedrooms, living and dining areas, kitchen and office space, three attached bathrooms, dressing and waiting rooms, a private balcony and a room for servants.
The MLAs are being provided huge televisions, split ACs, fridge, gas and electric geysers.
The complex also houses two landscaped gardens, health club, auditorium and children’s play area, community canteen, swimming pool, multipurpose and community halls.
However, the rent that the MLAs will be paying has become a talking point in various fora.
Gujarat Congress spokesperson Parthivraj Kathawadiya described it as a double standard of the ruling BJP. He told Vibes Of India that on one hand homes of the poor people are demolished and on the other hand MLAs are being given luxurious flats to live in. He said it would have been nice if instead of such flats the government would have improved the condition of the places where poor people live and constructed homes for them.
Will the old flats, some of which are in good condition, be given to the poor for accommodation, he asked, wondering what if in future the flats are given away to a private builder for redevelopment.
The current residences of the MLAs are not in a good condition and several are dilapidated. This promoted the state government to invest in better infrastructure.
