Omicron Sub-variant Drives Spike in Cases in Gujarat

| Updated: June 20, 2022 10:11

The number of fortnightly Covid cases in Gujarat has increased fourfold, from 529 in May 21 to June 4 to 2,249 in June 5 to 19. On Sunday, the state set a 114-day high for daily totals with 244. The rise could be due to Omicron’s sub-variant BA.2.38, according to experts.

According to the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC), 431 samples from Covid patients were whole genome sequenced in the last month. BA.2.38 was detected in 223 cases, or 52 percent of the total.

In May, the BA.2.38 variation was discovered in the state for the first time, and by June, it had achieved control. BA.2, the most common variety in India and many other nations, ruled the state until May, accounting for 145 percent of all sequencing in the previous month’s data.

According to experts, Maharashtra has also seen the introduction of BA.2.38 as a fast-dominating sub-variant of Covid, resulting in an increase in daily cases. It was also reported to be present in Delhi and Kerala, according to reports.

GBRC’s study of the sub-variants in Gujarat revealed the presence of BA.5 in seven samples and BA.4 in three. Both are thought to be to blame for the increase of Covid cases in various European countries.
