Pahalgam Attack: Ganderbal Police Detain Suspect After Video Goes Viral

| Updated: April 26, 2025 14:03

After the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead, Ganderbal District Police have detained a man whose photo surfaced in a viral video shared by a tourist claiming a suspicious interaction.

According to a report, the man, identified as Aiyaz Ahmad Jungal, son of Gh Nabi Jungal from Gohipora Raizan, Ganderbal, works as a pony service provider at Thajwas Glacier in Sonamarg. Police have said he is under sustained interrogation and legal proceedings are underway. Investigators are probing whether he has any link to the Pahalgam attack.

The action comes after a video featuring Ekta Tiwari, a tourist from Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, went viral. In it, she alleged that during her visit to Baisaran Valley on April 20, two men — resembling suspects from police sketches — questioned her about her religion during a mule ride.

Tiwari claimed one of the men, wearing a maroon jacket and pyjamas, asked if she had visited Amarnath or Ajmer Dargah, and offered to bypass official registration for the Amarnath Yatra. She also said the man asked if she preferred Hinduism or Islam and whether she had read the Quran.

According to Tiwari, she overheard the man on a phone call saying, “Plan A brake fail, Plan B 35 guns sent and kept on the grass in the valley.” She alleged he switched languages when he noticed her listening. She described him as a Pakistani-origin man claiming to be a Quran teacher who had been in the area for seven years.

She said no security or tourist booth was visible in the area and the nearest checkpoint was unmanned.

Tiwari said her entire group of 20 people recognised the suspects from the sketches and insisted she was “200% sure” about the identification.

Police are verifying her claims and investigating any possible link between the individuals and the Pahalgam attack.
