Vasant Rathod, 34, a senior clerk with the State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) department, succumbed to a heart attack on Saturday while playing cricket. A viral clip of the incident shows Rathod on the bowling crease first squatting and then sitting on the ground as a result of exertion. Within seconds, he collapses and his teammates and doctors run to him.
Rathod was administered preliminary treatment and taken to Sola Civil Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
This was the latest in the string of incidents where people, all below 40 years of age, collapse and succumb to heart attacks. Experts said that it could well be due to physical exertion followed by plaque rupture. Plaque is a fatty substance that accumulates in the arterial wall, leading to clogged arteries. They added that the chances of death are relatively higher for the younger group when they suffer a heart attack.
