| Updated: May 1, 2022 12:54

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this morning, extended greetings to the people of Maharashtra and Gujarat as both states celebrate their Foundation Day on May 1. Through Twitter, he applauded the two states for all the progress they had achieved and wished them continued prosperity.

The two states were once part of the bigger Bombay state. In 1956, Mahagujarat Andolan was started, demanding that the two states be split on the basis of language. On May 1, 1960, finally the two states were formed, one with Gujarati-speaking populace and the other with Marathi speakers.

PM Modi congratulated Maharashtra, saying that the state has made phenomenal contributions to national progress. “The people of the state have excelled in diverse fields. I pray for the prosperity of the people of Maharashtra,” he said.

For Gujarat, PM Modi wrote in Gujarati, saying that the people of the state are inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel and several other greats. “The people of Gujarat are widely admired for their diverse accomplishments. May Gujarat keep progressing in the coming years,” he said.
