| Updated: March 18, 2025 17:26

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended an invitation to NASA astronaut Sunita Williams to visit India after her scheduled return to Earth on Wednesday, following a nine-month stay at the International Space Station (ISS). The invitation was conveyed in a letter dated March 1, delivered through former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino.

Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh shared the letter on social media platform X. In the letter, Modi expressed admiration for Williams’ accomplishments and conveyed the nation’s support.

“Even though you are thousands of miles away, you continue to remain close to our hearts. The people of India are praying for your good health and success in your mission,” Modi wrote.

Modi highlighted his anticipation of Williams’ visit, calling it an honour for India to welcome one of its “most illustrious daughters.” He recalled his 2016 meeting with Williams and her late father, Deepak Pandya, during his visit to the United States.

The prime minister also mentioned a recent meeting with Massimino in New Delhi, during which Williams’ name was discussed. “During the course of our conversation, your name came up and we discussed how proud we are of you and your work. Following this interaction, I could not stop myself from writing to you,” he said.

Modi noted that during his meetings with former US Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, he inquired about Williams’ wellbeing. He emphasised that Williams’ achievements continue to inspire 1.4 billion Indians.

“Recent developments have yet again showcased your inspirational fortitude and perseverance,” the letter stated.

The prime minister also extended his regards to Williams’ husband, Michael Williams, and acknowledged the anticipation of her mother, Bonnie Pandya, as she awaited her daughter’s return. Modi expressed confidence that her father’s blessings would be with her.

Williams, who holds a distinguished career as a NASA astronaut, is set to conclude her latest mission aboard the ISS, further adding to her legacy in space exploration.
