Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Friday arrested Lalla Pathan alias Bihari, the mastermind behind illegal Bangladeshi settlements near Chandola lake.
He was arrested from Rajasthan. After the demolition drive by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation in which more than 2,000 homes were razed to the ground, the police had detained his son Fateh Mohammad on April 29. The court has granted police his custody.
These were structures that came up in and around the lake during the last several years.
Bihari is accused of running rackets of different types. He facilitated illegal Bangladeshi immigrants to get aadhar cards based on fake rent agreements.
Sources said during interrogation, Fateh Mohammad told police that his father was attending a wedding in Rajasthan. He is also believed to have told the police that his father lives in five different properties with four wives.
The police raided the properties based on the information and collected several documents, including fake rent agreements. The police also succeeded in picking up a money counting machine and fake bill books from there.
Sources said his rackets included helping illegal Bangladeshi immigrants fake housing agreements, aadhar cards, drug distribution and even electricity them. He is also believed to have been involved in the “beneficiaries” getting illegal electricity connections. It is alleged that he also facilitated prostitution racket.
Bihari, the accused, is believed to be earning anywhere between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 20 lakh, every month. A native of Ajmer, he has been staying in Ahmedabad for over two decades.
Sources said that the police are also likely to investigate into Bihari’s links with the bigshots.
