| Updated: April 6, 2023 19:17

The high-profile detention of Kailash Goenka, MD, Sankalp Group from the seventh-floor room at Ahmedabad’s swanky Taj Skyline on Sindhu Bhavan Road is currently the talk of town. Sankalp is the name behind Taj and Ramada in Ahmedabad.

According to the Gujarat Prevention of Gambling Act, 1887, “gambling as such is not legal.”

Acting on a specific tip-off, Sarkhej Police descended on The Taj late Wednesday night. Police insiders shared: “Several prominent personalities, mainly businessmen including Kailash Goenka, were caught gambling with the red and white counters. Cash worth Rs 9.83 lakh and four mobile phones worth Rs 65,000 were seized. We also recovered 186 red and white tokens.”

The group largely comprised Goenka’s inner circle of friends. All were later released on bail. A case has been registered against them and investigation is underway.

Detailing the swoop down operation, sources added that the information was received by Head Constables Naushad Ali and Tushardan.

“On receiving the tip-off, Inspector Taral R. wasted no time in getting to The Taj. The force divided itself into different vehicles. Soon, we were knocking on Room 721 on the seventh floor. The group had clearly planned the high stakes evening. Chairs and tables were arranged into circular sets. As many as 10 people were caught gambling” added the source.
