Police Torturing Protesting Wrestlers: Rajasthan CM

| Updated: May 4, 2023 17:30

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot criticised the clash between police officers and wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Thursday.

The chief minister has accused the police of “torturing” the protesters and has called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take note of the situation.  Gehlot claimed that instead of addressing the wrestlers’ complaints of sexual harassment and intimidation, the Delhi Police resorted to brutality.

Since April 23, numerous wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar, alleging that Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Uttar Pradesh, sexually harassed and intimidated seven female wrestlers, one of whom is a minor.

On April 28, Delhi Police filed two FIRs against Singh, but the protesters are demanding his immediate arrest.

The situation escalated on Wednesday night when a scuffle broke out between the protesters and some police personnel, resulting in injuries to a few protesters.  The wrestlers claim that they were physically assaulted by the police, while Delhi Police has denied any use of force.
