Gujarat: Power Companies To Make Online Payment Of Bills Mandatory

| Updated: August 3, 2022 14:31

All state-run power distribution companies in Gujarat have decided to make online payments mandatory for customers with power bills of Rs10,000 or more. In the near future, this norm may also apply to bills that are less than Rs10,000.

The decision to make online payments compulsory was taken to make the process of bill collection easier and more organized. It is also part of the plan to digitalize the systems completely. This process will also reduce manpower costs for the companies. The customers will also benefit as they will not have to drive all the way to the centres and wait in queues to pay their bills.

According to sources, customers will be able to pay through net banking, debit cards, credit cards, UPI and RTGS, NEFT and even e-wallets. It is likely that the companies will not charge convenience fees for the same.

Currently, the government power distribution companies collect about 60% of their bills digitally while the rest is in cash. In the coming months, digital payments will be above 90% of the total collection.
