Prez Murmu Hails Rajasthan’s Historical Strides Towards Gender Equality

| Updated: January 4, 2023 12:40

On her first trip to Rajasthan after assuming office President Droupadi Murmu reached Jaipur on a special flight on Monday. She was received at the airport by Governor Kalraj Mishra and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

From the airport, the President went to the Amar Jawan Jyoti and paid homage to the martyrs. Her second stop was the Raj Bhavan where she inaugurated the Constitution Park.

This first of its kind park, showcases the historical journey of the making of the Constitution of India and its implementation through sculptures, photographs, models and artistic forms.

Appreciating the artists for describing artistically the three-year period when the Constitution was written, the President remarked: “A major chapter of our modern history is presented at the Park through elegant paintings, sculptures and art forms. Our democracy is vibrant and the fact that it has, so far, accommodated 105 Constitutional amendments, shows that the Constitution is a living document which is fully capable of containing the hopes and aspirations of the public changing with time.”

The Park, a flagship project by Guv Mishra, is being widely lauded. He laid its foundation on the 2021 Republic Day. The Jaipur Development Authority completed the construction at an estimated cost of Rs 9 crore in less than a year.

President Murmu also virtually laid the foundation for the 1,000 MW solar power station in Bikaner.

“Rajasthan has made big contributions to social equality and women’s empowerment. The law against child marriage was made by Harbilas Sarda from Rajasthan. Sarda had drafted the law in 1938 which later became famous as Sarda Act (Child Marriage Restraint Act). That’s why the history of Rajasthan is the history of dignity and empowerment of women,” she noted in her speech.

Murmu also emphasised on Constitutional Morality. As she put it: “Babasaheb Ambedkar had spoken of this. Our main aim is sensitivity towards every living being. Goodness begets good and reading the Constitution with a mind ready to receive guidance makes it an invaluable reference point. On the other hand, decoding the provisions with a negative mindset would lead to questioning every clause. We must ask for change only when there is a need backed by empirical evidence.”

She also hailed the 15 women in the Constituent Assembly. “Representatives like Sarojini Naidu, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, Malti Chowdhary, Begum Ejaz Rasool, among others, gave important suggestions in the Constituent Assembly. Today there are more than 100 women MPs. We have a record to 83 women MPs in the Lok Sabha and 33 in the Rajya Sabha.”

The President later left for Udaipur in the afternoon, where she participated in a programme of Brahma Kumaris on Abu Road. On Wednesday, after inaugurating the Scout Guide’s Jamboree at Rohat in Pali, she returned to Delhi from Jodhpur.
