Mundra mid-sea operation: DRI and NCB seize heroin worth Rs 10 crores

Two consignments having total quantity of 2988 kg and 22 grams of heroin were seized from Mundra port on Kutch coast in Gujarat, value of which in international market is estimated to be more than Rs. 10,000 crores. Actual price will be determined after examining purity of drugs seized. During the year 2021, drugs worth crores have been seized from the seas off Gujarat coast. Security agencies are concerned about narco-terrorism in all over country including Gujarat.

The DRI and the NCB conducted a search in the Kandahar bound ship at Mundra port. Talcum powder was declared in customs for these two consignments. The team was shocked upon finding heroin drugs in the 32 bags of first consignment. Another consignment also found heroin in it. A total of 2988 kilograms of heroin have been seized.

In the year 2021, consignments of heroin worth crores of rupees have been seized from the coast of Gujarat and from the international waters between Pakistan and India The Porbandar Coast Guard and ATS team nabbed seven Iranians from the international maritime border with boats and heroin worth Rs 150 crore.

In January 2021, an ATS team caught five Pakistani fishermen with a boat off the coast of Kutch. A quantity of heroin worth Rs 175 crore was recovered from the boat. In April, eight Pakistanis were held from the seas with 30 kilograms of heroin worth Rs 150 crore. In August 2018, the ATS team nabbed two men with 5 kg of heroin at Jam Salaya The men hid the drugs in a hole in a field on the outskirts of the village The ATS team carried out the operation successfully. Two drug suppliers were arrested and while interrogating them it was revealed that 100 kilograms of heroin was already smuggled into India. The security agencies were shocked when 1500 kilograms of heroin was found from a ship in July 2017.

The Gujarat ATS team conducted an operation in international waters in March 2019 on a tip-off. A team of ATS and Coastguard tried to intercept the boat carrying 100 kilograms of heroin. The boat was set on fire by Iranians just before the ATS team could approach. However, risking their lives, the ATS team seized a quantity of heroin from the burning boat.

Apart from this, from the coast of Kutch there have been 4 incidents of finding abandoned beans containing drugs in last two years. 1552 kg packets of charas worth crores of rupees are found by the Marine Police, Coast Guard and BSF team from different places.

The Taliban who formed the government in Afghanistan are now focusing on opium poppy cultivation. Opium is used to make drugs like heroin. Drugs worth trillions of dollars is sent to countries around the world by way of narco-terrorism. Drugs are their main source of income.

Drug mafias also change routes frequently. Consignments of drugs are sent from Pakistani ports. Gujarat’s 1600 km long coastline is preferred. Pakistani fishermen who come to fish between the waters of Gujarat and international waters also come with consignments of drugs at times.
