Ahmedabad on Sunday was hit by heavy rains with thunderstorms in the evening after a spell of high temperature in the city. Waterlogging situation was witnessed in many parts of the city and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) was forced to shutdown the underpasses of the city due to it. As many as eight gates of Vasna barrage were opened up to two-four feet to maintain the water level.
The Paldi area of the city witnessed 10 inches of rain, 8 inches rainfall was reported in Usmanpura, Bodakdev and more than five inches in other places of the city in nearly three hours of continuous rainfall.
It started raining with heavy thunderstorms in Bopal, Chandkheda, Gota and Science City areas of the city with a change in the weather at 6 pm on Sunday. In Vadaj, Usmanpura, Paldi and Vasna area, rain water was chocked on the roads. Apart from Odhav in the east of Ahmedabad, heavy rains were witnessed in Viratnagar, Chakudia and Narol including Khadia, Raipur, Manekchowk as well as Municipal Corporation and Dudheshwar area in an hour from 7 pm to 8 pm. In addition to this, heavy rains lashed several low-lying areas, including Naroda and Kotarpur.Following this, Municipal Commissioner Lochan Sehra instructed the municipal officials to control the situation.
In order to maintain the water level at Vasna Barrage at 128.5 feet, Gate Nos. 17 to 24 of the barrage were opened up to four feet. According to the reports, an average of five inches of rainfall was witnessed in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
