Rajasthan Sets Ujjwala Cylinder Price At ₹500, Becomes First State to Do So

| Updated: June 6, 2023 16:09

In a groundbreaking move, Rajasthan has become the first state to fix the price of Ujjwala cylinders at ₹500. The state government transferred a subsidy of ₹60 crores to around 14 lakh beneficiaries, including gas connection holders from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. The subsidy amount was directly deposited into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries by Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot during a state-level Labharthi Utsav in Jaipur on Monday.

During the event, CM Gehlot addressed the beneficiaries and highlighted the state government’s commitment to the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. He stated, “While the BJP halts our schemes, we have furthered the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana by reducing the cost of cylinders.”

Gehlot emphasized the significance of implementing social security schemes through legislation, emphasizing that these initiatives were not limited to election periods. He expressed his aspiration for the central government to pass a law ensuring a pension sufficient for a dignified living, regardless of whether it amounts to ₹2,000 or ₹3,000. Gehlot also mentioned that the upcoming Congress party manifesto would prioritize the needs of widows, SC-ST communities, and the poor.

The subsidized gas cylinders are part of Gehlot’s inflation relief package, which was announced in the budget speech. According to government data, Rajasthan has approximately 76 lakh Ujjwala and BPL beneficiaries, with 14 lakh individuals registering themselves in the inflation relief camps organized by the Gehlot government.

Registration in these camps is mandatory to avail the benefits of the scheme. The implementation of this scheme is expected to place a financial burden of around ₹750 crore on the government annually, which may increase if gas cylinder prices rise.

Earlier this month, Gehlot also announced the implementation of a scheme providing free electricity for up to 100 units, benefiting approximately 1.24 crore families in the state. These measures showcase the Rajasthan government’s commitment to uplifting its citizens and addressing the challenges posed by inflation.
