The Supreme Court of India on Friday said that it will hear the plea of influencer Ranveer Allahbadia regarding the FIRs lodged against him over his alleged inappropriate comments made during a YouTube show.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar stated that the matter would be listed in two to three days.
The court informed Abhinav Chandrachud, appearing for Allahbadia, that it does not allow oral mentioning for urgent listing of cases.
Chief Justice Khanna said, “I have assigned the bench and it will come up (before a bench) in two-three days,” after Chandrachud mentioned that the Assam police had summoned Allahbadia to join the investigation that day.
The controversy surrounding Allahbadia started after his remarks on parents and sex during his appearance on comedian Samay Raina’s YouTube show, India’s Got Latent. The comments ignited huge backlash, resulting in several FIRs being filed against Allahbadia and others in multiple states across India.
An Assam police team is currently in Pune to issue a summons to Raina in connection with a case filed in Assam regarding the now-deleted YouTube episode. Raina, who owns a residence in Balewadi, Pune, is also named in the FIR, alongside Allahbadia.
The initial case was registered on Monday in Guwahati by a local resident who accused the show of promoting obscenity in a publicly accessible online format. Along with Allahbadia and Raina, social media influencers Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, and Apoorva Makhija have also been named in the case.
Allahbadia has been asked to report to Mumbai’s Khar police station, where he is facing investigation. Additionally, he is under scrutiny in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, following a separate police complaint.
The Maharashtra Cyber Department has also registered a case under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act, demanding the removal of all 18 episodes of the India’s Got Latent show.
