Rocky, the rottweiler pet, that fatally attacked a four-month-old baby girl in a housing society in Ahmedabad earlier this month, died in the custody of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
According to official information, the dog died on Tuesday.
The AMC said that after it was impounded by the AMC’s Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) following a FIR against the owner Dilip Patel, it was kept at the dog rescue centre of the Corporation in Danilimda. The pet was under the supervision of Dr Divyesh Solanki.
Patel was arrested by the Police.
The AMC officials said visits and inputs were also taken from animal behaviour experts and NGOs, including Bowsome Senior Dogs India and other animal welfare advocates.
“On May 19, the dog was shifted to a private veterinary hospital in Bodakdev after it showed signs of illness. He was diagnosed with babesiosis — a tick-borne protozoal infection, which is fatal if untreated. Despite treatment in an ICU facility, Rocky died at 1.45pm on May 27. His remains were transferred to the ABC Centre, Behrampura, and a post-mortem was conducted by a govt veterinary officer,” according to the report.
Viscera samples have been sent to the Animal Disease Research Office in Makarba for laboratory examination.
According to information, the AMC bore the cost of the dog’s treatment that amounted to Rs 25,000.
Animal lovers and dog rescuers claimed that while authorities have the right to observe and assess a seized animal, prolonged confinement in cramped conditions without adequate veterinary care amounts to inhumane treatment.
