Sabarmati Riverfront: Bystanders Stop 23-Yr-Old Girl From Committing Suicide

| Updated: July 20, 2022 14:05

A 23-year-old tried to commit suicide by jumping into the Sabarmati river at Ahmedabad’s riverfront. Fortunately, some bystanders spotted her and stopped her from taking the leap. The girl, a resident of Shahibaug area, when taken to the police station revealed that she had no other choice as her husband had abused her and then abandoned her. Prior to attempting suicide, she had recorded a video as well.

The police have filed a complaint against the girl’s husband, Yogesh Dakhadia, 27. The girl said that the two had fallen in love and gotten married on July 19, 2021. However, immediately after tying the knot, her husband began beating her and abusing her sexually. She became desperate because of his tendency to use violence at every turn. Even after all this, Dakhadia abandoned the girl just about two weeks later. The girl had made many attempts to reconcile the relationship, but Dakhadia had not responded.

According to the complaint filed, Dakhadia has been married twice earlier. He is currently living with another woman. He has been charged with rape and also facing provisions of the POCSO Act.

Such cases are not uncommon at the Riverfront. In February 2021, Ayesha Banu recorded a video, where she talks about her decision and her hope that God will accept her in his world. Furthermore, in June this year, Nafisa Khohar also recorded a video and jumped into the river. She was saved by the people around and sent home to Vadodara. Nevertheless, Nafisa took her life by hanging herself.
