| Updated: July 26, 2021 18:23

Tokyo Olympics 2020 has a representation of over 127 athletes to compete in around 18 sporting events from India. The Indian contingent at the Summer Olympics 2020 includes athletes from across the country. Two days back on July 24, India opened its medal account by getting a silver medal, won by Northeastern athlete Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, in weightlifting.

Northeastern states, commonly known as the seven sister states, are mostly known for their unique culture and scenic-high altitude settlements. With a tough terrain as part of their geography, improper amenities and lack of state-of-the-art facilities in comparison to other mainstream states, have always been a point of discussion. Despite the odds, the Indian contingent at Tokyo Olympics 2020 includes seven athletes, from the Northeastern states:

Tarundeep Rai: Tarundeep Rai, 37, is a Sikkim-born Indian archer, who made his international debut at the Asian archery championship aged 19 in 2003. Tarundeep has qualified for two events at TokyoOlympics 2020 – Archery Men’s recurve individual event and Archery Men’s team event. He will be seen in action today for a quarterfinal clash against the Korean team at Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Mary Kom: Mary Kom, 38, is an Indian boxer who hails from Manipur. The amateur boxer is a six-time world champion and London Olympics Bronze medallist. Mary Kom was nominated as a Rajya Sabha member by the President in 2016. She has entered the pre-quarterfinal round of flyweight boxing after opening round win at Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Lovlina Borgohain: Lovlina Borgohain, 23, the Indian boxer, comes from the state of Assam. She has qualified for the pre-quarterfinal round of Welterweight boxing at Tokyo Olympics 2020 and will be the first one to win an Olympic medal from the state if she wins her two upcoming matches. The two-time World Championship will next be seen in action against Germany Pugilist, Nadine Apetz.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu: Mirabai Chanu, 27, the Indian weightlifter, hails from Manipur. She has been the awardee of two national awards – Padma Shri and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. She became the first athlete at Tokyo Olympics 2020 to win and open the medals tally by winning a silver in the Women’s 49 kg weightlifting category. Chanu became the first Indian lifter to win a silver in Olympics history on Saturday.

Shushila Likmabam: Shushila Likmabam, 26, is an Indian Judoka, who comes from Manipur. The lone representative for India in Judo at Tokyo Olympics 2020 is the 2014 Commonwealth Games, silver medalist. She crashed out of Tokyo Olympics 2020 after a defeat against Hungary’s Eva Csernoviczki in Women’s 48kg category elimination round on Saturday. Shushila ranked 46 in the world, lost to 24 ranked Hungarian Judoka.

Lalremsiami Hmar: Lalremsiami Hmar, 21, is a field hockey player. The forward of the Indian National Hockey Team hails from Mizoram. She was the first sportsperson from Mizoram to win an Asian medal after the squad won silver at the Asian Games. She was also a part of the squad that represented India in the 2018 Hockey World Cup.
