The spate of students collapsing and dying in schools in Rajkot district sees no end. Days after a Class 10 student Devansh Bhayani died in a school near Gondal town of the district, a Class 12 student collapsed and died in a school in Rajkot city on Monday. Both the students had reportedly no medical history.
Mudit Nadiyapara, a student of Lal Bahadur Shashtri Vidyalaya, collapsed inside his classroom around 11.10 am. He was shifted to the principal’s chamber, where the school staff tried chest compression and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before rushing him to the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Government Hospital, popularly known as the Rajkot civil hospital, around 1.5 km away. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Darksha Rojivadiya, the teacher who was present in the classroom, said the student was normal till he collapsed from his bench. “He had his refreshment in the recess and prepared for an examination in the fifth period of the day. We had a unit examination scheduled during sixth and seventh periods. While we were distributing question papers, he collapsed and became unconscious,” the teacher said. “We immediately shifted him to the principal’s chamber, which is air-conditioned, and called 108 (for an ambulance) and did pumping and took him to the hospital.”
Mudit’s father Akshay Nadiyapara told reporters that the boy did not have any medical history. “I was at work when I received a call from his school informing me that he had become unconscious. The teachers brought him here to the civil hospital in a 108 ambulance. By that time, I had also reached here. But after examining him, doctors told us that he was no more,” Akshay said.
This is the third student death inside a school in the district this year. In January, Riya Sagar (14), a Class 8 student at AV Jasani Vidya Mandir in Rajkot city, collapsed minutes after entering her classroom in the morning and died. On July 4, Devansh Bhayani, a Class 10 student at SGVP Gurukul in Ribda village near Gondal, collapsed when he and other students were moving a small podium for a Guru Purnima event inside the school.
