A college student from Dindoli, Surat, lost Rs2.48 lakhs by falling into the trap of a team of scammers. The student had applied for a job at the Surat airport through a social media platform. A few days later, someone called the student and managed to extort Rs2.48 lakhs in the name of online exam, training, laptop and bond.
The 22-year-old student, Radha Yadav, has registered a complaint with the police. She said that the scammers had first contacted her on May 2, and later started asking for money. They claimed that these were charges for the online exams, a laptop and training. They also extorted some money in the name of a bond.
Taniya Sharma, Vikram, Johnny Singh and Amarjeet have been named in the complaint. The police have registered the complaint and are investigating the matter.
Online fraud cases have been increasing in Gujarat rapidly. Although the cybercrime branch is working hard to track down the scammers, they have been unable to prevent such cases of money extortion or online fraud. In July, three members of a gang were arrested for scamming people online. The gang urged the customers to buy packaging materials in bulk, took advance payment from them and then vanished into thin air. The three arrested are all residents of Ahmedabad.
