The cruelty of a teacher crossed all limits when she thrashed a 3.5-year-old girl in a Surat school 35 times in just about two minutes. The 48-year-old was later arrested by the police as enraged parents demanded she be handed over to them.
The teacher, identified as Jashoda Khokhariya, resorted to this inhuman conduct on October 9, but it came to light on Wednesday after the CCTV footage from the classroom went viral on social media. A large number of parents protested vehemently at the private trust-run Sadhna Niketan Vidhyalaya in Punagam area of the city.
The girl, daughter of a diamond artisan, studied in the pre-primary class. Khokhariya is seen seated between two rows on a chair beside the girl sitting on the first bench. She repeatedly beats her on the back and pinches her cheeks even as the girl writhes in pain and other students watch in disbelief.
“We arrested Khokhariya on the complaint lodged by the girl’s mother. We have invoked section 75 and 82 (corporal punishment) of the Juvenile Justice Act against her,” said Kapodra police.
“During preliminary questioning, Khokhariya told police that she thrashed the girl as she was not writing,” they added.
Police also got the medical check-up of the girl done and there were swellings with red marks on the back even two days after the incident. “She was traumatized by the lashing,” he said.
Khokhariya, who had been working with this school for the last 15 years, was sacked by the trustees following orders of the district education officer (DEO) office.
A show-cause notice was issued to the school asking it to inform the education department about measures it will take to ensure that such brutality is not repeated.
Parents alleged that the school did not cooperate with them when they went to complain against the teacher and hit back saying that the girl had not done her homework. However, her mother told the police that she ensured her kid completed the homework daily.
