Customs officials at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport seized 1kg of gold that had been concealed within a microwave oven by a passenger on Tuesday.
The officials reported that they apprehended the individual after profiling procedures and an extensive examination of their luggage, resulting in the confiscation of the gold. The market value of the seized gold is approximately Rs 62.7 lakh.
In a recent incident this October, Ahmedabad customs seized 20kg of gold and arrested seven individuals. The customs authorities highlighted that the gold had been smuggled to evade customs duties, using various methods such as concealing gold paste in undergarments, transporting gold paste capsules within the body, hiding gold rods inside a microscope, and stashing gold in airplane compartments and perfume bottles.
Additionally, the customs department disclosed that they made seizures of foreign currency and phones in different cases, indicating a broader enforcement effort beyond gold smuggling incidents.
