TATA Group will Make 2 Taj Branded Resorts in Lakshadweep

| Updated: January 8, 2024 18:26

The Tata Group’s hospitality arm, Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), has signed two Taj-branded resorts on the islands of Suheli and Kadmat in Lakshadweep, India’s smallest union territory. The resorts, which are expected to open in 2026, will be developed with a focus on sustainability and conservation of the island’s fragile eco-system.

IHCL, which is India’s largest hospitality company, said that the signing reflects its commitment to innovation and its pioneering spirit that has put destinations like Rajasthan, Kerala, Goa, and Andamans on the global tourist map. Puneet Chhatwal, the Managing Director and CEO of IHCL, said that the resorts will offer a unique and differentiated experience to the travellers, while leaving a minimal footprint on the environment.

The signing comes at a time when Lakshadweep is being promoted as a prime vacation destination for the Indian tourists, amid the strained relations between India and Maldives. The Maldives government has accused India of interfering in its internal affairs and some of its ministers have criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In response, Modi visited Lakshadweep in December 2023 and urged the Indians to choose Lakshadweep over Maldives.

The Taj Suheli will have 110 rooms, including 60 beach villas and 50 water villas, while the Taj Kadmat will have 110 rooms, comprising 75 beach villas and 35 water villas. Kadmat Island, also known as Cardamom Island, is a coral island with a large lagoon and a marine protected area with seagrass beds, which are important for the nesting of marine turtles.

IHCL has also launched Jaagir Manor, a SeleQtions hotel in Dudhwa, Uttar Pradesh. This 20-room hotel, set amidst orchards and forests, offers a mix of heritage rooms from the 1940s and luxurious villas.
