Third Wave Is Here: Gujarat Records 2,265 Covid Cases In Last 24 Hours

| Updated: January 5, 2022 09:46

The state recorded a 79% jump in the daily Covid cases with the addition of a whopping 2,265 fresh cases in the last 24 hours.

The state recorded two deaths – one each in Navsari and Bhavnagar – taking the total death count since the start of the pandemic to 10,125. Gujarat had 1,259 Covid cases, three deaths and 17 Omicron infections yesterday. With today’s update, the state has added over 3,500 cases in just two days, forming 44% of the total active cases (7,881). Ahmedabad remained the biggest contributor with 1,290 cases. Other major contributors include Surat (415), Vadodara (86), Anand (70), Rajkot (36), and Gandhinagar (23).

Gujarat had two Omicron cases on Tuesday, both in Ahmedabad and with no international travel history, indicating local transmission. Despite the constant surge in the number of cases, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and the state health department continue to maintain that no curb in the upcoming events, including the Flower Show, Vibrant Gujarat Summit and Kite Festival, will be imposed.

AMC’s medical officer of health, Bhavin Solanki, and the state’s additional chief secretary of health Manoj Aggarwal refused to comment on what preparations they have made to ensure no spread of the virus during these events. Both the officials have been participating in the Union Ministry’s review meeting on Covid, but are conveniently mum on what measures are they taking in Gujarat to curb the spread of the virus.

Scenario Across India

India’s Covid tally rose to 3,49,60,261 with 37,379 new cases, while the active cases increased to 1,71,830 in the last 24 hours, according to the data updated on the Union Health Ministry’s website. The number of deaths climbed to 4,82,017 with 124 more fatalities, the data showed. The active cases comprise 0.49 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.13 per cent, the health ministry said in its daily bulletin.
