Two Workers Die of Asphyxiation in Sewage Pumping Station in Gujarat

| Updated: January 22, 2025 12:28

Two workers, Jayesh Patadiya and Chirag Patadiya, died on Tuesday after allegedly suffocating in an underground sewage pumping station in Patdi town in Surendranagar district. The incident occurred as they entered the facility to carry out cleaning work without safety equipment.

Both men were contractual employees of the Patdi Municipality. Local sources reported that they were sent into the hazardous environment without any protective gear, raising serious concerns about workplace safety protocols.

Following the incident, relatives of the deceased and activists from various non-governmental organisations gathered to demand compensation for the families and the filing of a formal complaint against those responsible. Their protests prompted swift action from the authorities.

An FIR was registered at the Patdi police station later in the evening. Those named in the report include Mausum Patel, Chief Officer of Patdi Municipality; Harshadbhai, the sanitary inspector; and Sanjay S Patel, the chief contractor overseeing the work. They have been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including culpable homicide not amounting to murder and reckless endangerment.

Additional charges have been filed under the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, as well as the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Similar incidents have been reported in the state in recent months.

Last year, in December, four workers died from toxic gas exposure at a chloromethane plant in Bharuch district. In October, five workers were killed by asphyxiation while cleaning a sludge tank at an edible oil and biodiesel production facility in Kutch district. In July, three labourers suffocated in an illegal coal mine in Surendranagar district while working without safety gear.

Earlier in 2023, four workers, including a father and son, died while cleaning a water recycling plant tank in Surat district.
