UAE-based philanthropist Dr Shamsheer Vayalil has announced ₹6 crore in financial aid for families devastated by the Air India flight AI 171 crash in Ahmedabad.
According to media reports, the relief includes ₹1 crore each for the families of the four deceased medical students, ₹20 lakh each for five critically injured students, and ₹20 lakh each for families of doctors who lost loved ones.
Moved by the tragedy’s resemblance to his own time in medical hostels, Dr Shamsheer said, “It hit close. Too close.”
Air India’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed soon after take off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. It was on way to Gatwick, London.
It resulted in the death of all but one of the 230 passengers, 10 crew members, two pilots and several others on the ground.
The air plane crashed into B. J. Medical College Hostel. Students were having lunch when the Dreamliner hit the building.
Initial reports suggest a possible engine failure, but a detailed investigation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), along with international aviation authorities, is underway to determine the exact cause. The impact of the crash was devastating, with the aircraft disintegrating on contact and bodies were severely charred, beyond recognition.
