Uttarakhand All Set To Implement Historic UCC Code

| Updated: January 27, 2025 14:13

As the first state to adopt the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Uttarakhand is poised to make history. The historic law will be unveiled before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state. According to government representatives, the UCC would be applied to all of Uttarakhand and to those who live outside the state.

According to government representatives, the UCC will be applied to all of Uttarakhand and to those who live outside the state.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will lead the event. “We are fulfilling our commitments. The abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir was an instance of it. The Indian republic stands firmly under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he was quoted as saying by a news agency.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we made a commitment to the people of the state about bringing the UCC in the run-up to the 2022 assembly elections. We took it up on priority after forming the government. The UCC was drafted and an Act on it was brought. We are now going to fulfil that commitment fully and formally on Monday,” he added.

“It will be in keeping with the prime minister’s vision of creating a harmonious India where there is no discrimination against any religion, gender, caste or community,” he said.

The Code, according to reports, will have a framework for marriage, divorce, property, inheritance and adoption laws. It prohibits polygamy.

Additionally, it eliminates the distinction between legitimate and illegitimate children. Another notable aspect of the law is that children adopted, through surrogacy, will be treated equally to biological children.

The law aims to grant equal property rights to the spouse and children, following a person’s death.

Reports claim that President Droupadi Murmu had consented to Uttarakhand’s UCC Bill in March 2024.
