| Updated: April 16, 2024 11:59

Tender coconut water is a low-calorie drink rich in minerals and electrolytes

Coconut water is one drink that never goes out of fashion. It has been consumed for centuries in tropical regions of the world and continues to be one of the primary choices on a hot summer day. In Ayurveda, coconut water is believed to help in digestion and urination apart from providing an instant boost of energy.

Tender coconut water is a clear liquid present inside green coconuts. It is mildly sweet and nutty in flavour. Over 95% of coconut water is plain water. Coconut water is rich in various minerals and electrolytes like potassium, calcium, manganese, antioxidants and amino acids. It is low in calories, carbohydrates, and sugar, unlike other juices.

Here are some benefits of this cooling and energising drink:

  • No chemicals: Tender coconut water is a natural rehydrating drink that has no added chemicals or harmful ingredients. It is very effective in keeping you hydrated, especially during summers. Drink natural coconut water not packaged options which contain preservatives to increase shelf life.
  • Boosts energy: Coconut water is a good beverage to have during and after a workout. If you drink this water during exercise, it may prevent fatigue and dehydration. And, it contains more potassium and electrolytes, less sodium, and fewer carbohydrates than many sports drinks.
  • Promotes weight loss: Tender coconut has no fat. It is a very low-calorie drink – one cup of coconut water contains only 48 calories. It can be consumed before a meal to reduce binge eating among weight-watchers.
  • Helps manage diabetes: Coconut water is a good source of manganese, which may increase insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels.
  • Good for heart: Additionally, coconut water also helps increase good cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein) levels, which decreases the risk of heart disease.
  • Settles the stomach: The best way to give your upset stomach rest, whether it’s due to an infection or acidity, is by replacing your meal with tender coconut water. It nourishes the body and allows your stomach and intestine to recover.
  • Restores electrolytes: Coconut water is rich in electrolytes. On a hot summer day, electrolytes are lost due to sweating and this makes you feel tired. Tender coconut helps you replenish electrolytes and feel refreshed.
  • Reduces constipation: Tender coconut water has soluble fibre which eases bowel movements.
  • Prevents kidney stones: Tender coconut water acts as a diuretic to flush extra water out of the body and also prevents kidney stones. This way, it also prevents urinary tract infections.
  • Detox drink: Tender coconut water has properties that remove mineral toxins from the blood. It also helps in eliminating toxins accumulated in the intestine due to poor digestion.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Tender coconut water has great anti-inflammatory properties. It can reduce inflammation internally when consumed. It can also be externally applied on a summer boil or a rash to reduce inflammation.
  • Healthy skin and hair: Rich in electrolytes and vitamins, this natural beverage promotes radiant skin. It contains vitamin C and antioxidants and may naturally  stimulate collagen synthesis. Its hydrating properties contribute to healthy hair.
