26/11 Mumbai Attack: India In Touch With US Over Rana Extradition

| Updated: May 18, 2023 19:54

In light of a US court sanctioning the extradition of the accused in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra said on Thursday that India is in frequent contact with US authorities to ensure Tahawwur Rana’s quick and early extradition.

On May 16, US magistrate Judge Jacqueline Chooljian of the US district court for the central district of California issued a 48-page judgement, stating that ‘Rana should be extradited to India’, marking a significant success for India in its fight to bring the perpetrators of the 26/11 attacks to justice.

“Insofar as the question of Tahawwur Rana is concerned, we are in very regular touch with the US authorities to ensure that there is speedy and early extradition of Tahawwur Rana. We have all seen the judgement which was given by the local US court there. That conversation of ours with the US side is continuing,” Kwatra said.

He was responding to a question at a press conference about whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will bring up the subject of Rana’s extradition to India if there is a bilateral meeting between him and US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Hiroshima.

A meeting between Modi and Biden on a bilateral basis was not confirmed by Kwatra.
