It was meant be just a political rally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tamil Nadu. However, it gained attention for a completely unrelated reason. It had nothing to do with what and how PM Modi spoke.
Videos and images from the rally spread quickly across social media ahead of the April 23 elections. A section of users began speculating that he appeared darker than usual. Some alleged use of darker-toned makeup, a ploy for a calculated outreach to local voters.
Not everyone bought into it. A significant number of users argued that the perceived difference had a straightforward explanation — outdoor lighting, harsh sunlight, camera exposure, or post-processing effects.
Visual media experts backed this reading. Outdoor rallies in peak daylight, they noted, can dramatically alter how skin tones appear on camera. Angles and equipment choices make a further difference.
None of that slowed the debate down.
The controversy did not stay narrow for long. Some users began framing it within the context of the North-South divide. That framing sharpened reactions and pushed the discourse well beyond the original claim.
The online space quickly became polarised, with criticism and defence trending at the same time.
Political observers believe this pattern is becoming routine during high-stakes election periods. Fragmented visuals, amplified virally, often shape narratives faster than facts can catch up. They cautioned against drawing conclusions from selectively circulated clips, particularly in a charged political environment.
As of now, neither the Prime Minister’s Office nor any government spokesperson has responded to the specific claims.
The episode is a reminder of how quickly perception can outrun reality during election season. A visual, a claim, a counter-claim. And suddenly, it is all anyone is talking about, verified or not.
