Old officer numbers, 5-year-old vehicle data: Gujarat RTO portal raises eyebrows
Updated: May 7th, 2026
Gujarat’s push for digital governance and AI-driven administration seems to have hit a bump. The state transport department’s official website faces serious concerns over outdated and limited public information.
Citizens visiting the portal often encounter old contact numbers of RTO and ARTO officers, making it difficult to access timely assistance or communicate with officials. Questions are also being raised over the reliability of vehicle-related data on the website, with some information reportedly dating back nearly five years.
Apart from basic notices and redirects to the Centre’s ‘Parivahan’ portal for services like driving licences and vehicle registration, users say there is little significant or relevant information available for the public on the website.
The issue has sparked criticism over the gap between Gujarat’s digital governance claims and the actual condition of public-facing government portals.
With lakhs of Gujaratis depending on online government services, experts say state websites must provide updated contact details, real-time transport data and meaningful public information instead of functioning merely as static notice boards.
In February 2026, Gujarat Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia had announced a ‘Data Governance Framework’ and ‘Ethical AI’ initiative. However, if a department directly connected to lakhs of citizens cannot maintain updated information on its own website, the state’s claims of high-tech governance are bound to face scrutiny.
At present, the Gujarat Transport Department website appears to have been reduced to little more than an online notice board. If Gujarat truly aims to establish itself as a digital leader, government websites must evolve beyond basic registration portals and provide accurate, updated and citizen-friendly information suited for 2026.
