4.9k Gujaratis Entered The US Post Dingucha Tragedy

| Updated: May 10, 2022 15:52

The small village of Dingucha, near Kalol district in Gandhinagar, hit headlines in January after a family of four died while attempting to illegally enter the US from the Canadian border. The outrageous news shocked the globe. It did little to prevent Gujaratis from approaching “smugglers” who resort to life-threatening measures to assist an illegal US entry.

According to the most recent information from state and federal officials investigating illegal immigration rackets in the state, around 4,900 persons from Mehsana, Gandhinagar, and Ahmedabad districts embarked on illegal travels to the United States following the Dingucha incident.

Senior police authorities investigating people smuggling crimes in the state accuse the agents already under investigation in previous cases of being engaged in the latest incidents as well.

Bharat alias Bobby Patel is a major human smuggler from the state. He runs the illicit routes with the support of Kalol or Mehsana residents Brugesh Patel, Rajesh Patel, and Yogesh Sathwara. For nearly a decade, they have been illegally transferring people to the United States via Mexico and Turkey. According to a top officer of the Gujarat police, they were involved in moving Jagdish Patel, his wife, and children from Dingucha to Canada, where they died just a few yards away from the US border while attempting to walk into the country of their dreams amid a blinding blizzard.
