In an annual Israeli beauty pageant that was held to honour women who endured the horrors of the Nazi genocide, an 86-year-old woman, Salina Steinfeld, was crowned ‘Miss Holocaust Survivor’.
There were ten contestants – all within 70 to 90 age range troding the catwalk with dazzling gowns and stylish girdles.
The contest was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, however, it has been going on annually since 2009. The event was attended by around 2,000 people and top 10 finalists were whittled down from 400 contestants in total.
Steinfeld was born in Romania where she had survived the Nazi attacks before moving to Israel in 1948. She said that after surviving the holocaust, she had never dreamt to get to where she is today.
‘And yet here I am, at this great age, 87. It’s a godly thing, it is indescribable.’
Other contestants included a woman born in Yogoslavia who survived the Rab concentration camp in Croatia.
