PM Modi To Launch World’s Longest River Cruise On Jan 13

| Updated: January 10, 2023 17:52

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the world’s longest river cruise, which will travel on January 13 from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to Dibrugarh in Assam via Bangladesh.

The opulent cruise will traverse 4,000 kilometres along 27 Indian river systems in 50 days, including the West Coast Canal, the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly, and the Brahmaputra.

PM Modi said, “This will be a trip like no other in the world, reflecting the booming cruise industry in India.” Recently, PM Modi launched many projects for West Bengal via video conference.

Throughout the voyage, 50 key tourist attractions will be seen, including some historical sites, the famous Varanasi Ganga Aarti, and protected regions like Kaziranga National Park and the Sundarbans Delta.

The journey would traverse more than 1,100 kilometres through Bangladesh. According to a senior official of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the agency in charge of National Waterways  (NWs), the cruise operated by a private company would be a regular fixture.

The expansion of the India-Bangladesh Protocol route had a big impact on how the cruise service was planned. The expansion of coastal and river shipping, notably cruise services, has been identified as one of the government’s main goals, according to Union Minister of Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.

The Center has been tasked with developing 100 national waterways with the intention of having world-class cruises operate on these rivers in addition to cargo flow.
