Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet on Friday warned of flight disruptions as dense fog and low visibility enveloped Delhi and large parts of northern India, adding to ongoing delays across the country’s aviation network.
The airlines issued travel advisories citing poor weather conditions, while Delhi airport also cautioned passengers to check flight status before heading to terminals. Low visibility conditions are expected to impact departures and arrivals through the day, officials said.
Air India said forecasts of dense fog over Delhi and parts of northern and eastern India could disrupt schedules and trigger cascading delays across its network. The airline said it had taken proactive measures to minimise disruption and that ground staff would assist passengers in case of delays or cancellations.
The carrier also said passengers booked on select affected flights would receive advance alerts and be allowed to reschedule travel without additional charges or opt for a full refund.
IndiGo issued a similar advisory early Friday, warning that flights during early morning hours could face delays or revised timings due to fog across northern India. The airline said it was monitoring weather conditions and coordinating with air traffic authorities to limit inconvenience to passengers.
SpiceJet said low visibility in Delhi could affect all arrivals, departures and consequential flights.
Delhi Airport said CAT III operations — which allow aircraft to land in extremely low visibility — have been activated, but warned that delays and disruptions are likely. Airport authorities said ground teams were working with stakeholders to assist passengers.
According to officials, visibility in parts of Delhi-NCR dropped to as low as 100 metres around 6 am on Thursday, as per India Meteorological Department data. At least 27 flights were cancelled and over 500 delayed due to weather-related disruptions.
The latest disruptions come amid mounting passenger complaints over frequent flight delays across India, driven by winter fog, air traffic congestion, aircraft availability issues and operational constraints at major hubs. Over the past several weeks, delays and cancellations have repeatedly hit key airports, including Delhi and Mumbai, straining airline schedules and testing airport capacity.
