Former IG Of Punjab Critical, Shoots Self After Rs 8 Crore Fraud

| Updated: December 23, 2025 14:01

Former Punjab Police Inspector General Amar Singh Chahal (66) is in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot injury at his residence in Patiala on Monday, police said.

A 12-page handwritten note recovered from the house alleges that the retired IPS officer was cheated of Rs. 8.1 crore in an online investment fraud. The note names a group operating on WhatsApp and Telegram—F-777 DBS Wealth Equity Research Group—which, Chahal claimed, projected itself as a credible advisory platform by citing regulatory approvals and associations with well-known financial institutions.

Police sources said a friend alerted authorities after receiving a message from Chahal, following which a team reached his residence around 1.45 pm and shifted him to hospital. Senior officials said he underwent surgery and remains under close medical observation, with the next 24 hours considered crucial.

Chahal, a 1990-batch IPS officer, had not lodged a formal complaint regarding the alleged fraud prior to the incident, police said.

According to the note, individuals posing as senior executives and advisers gradually gained investors’ confidence by sharing daily market tips, displaying simulated dashboards and promising increasing returns. As trust grew, investors were encouraged to commit larger sums, while purported participants vouched for the scheme when questions were raised.

The note further states that when Chahal sought to withdraw his funds, he was asked to pay additional amounts under various heads, including service charges, taxes and membership fees. Despite repeated payments, the funds were not released, the note alleges.

This is the second such incident involving a senior police officer in the region in recent months. In October, Haryana Additional Director General of Police Y Puran Kumar died at his Chandigarh residence.

Police said they have secured evidence and are examining the allegations mentioned in the note.
