Job cuts now seem inextricably tied to Amazon. A push to streamline, trim, and move on seems routine with the company.
In its latest step to stay lean, Amazon has confirmed cutting 16,000 jobs worldwide.
It marks another significant reduction in its corporate workforce.
This latest announcement continues the company’s ongoing cuts following the 14,000 roles eliminated in October last year.
The company said these cuts are part of a broader effort to streamline the organisation.
This is reportedly being done by reducing layers, increasing ownership and removing bureaucracy.
This round of layoffs is expected to bring the total cuts across Amazon to around 30,000 roles since October. It marks one of the largest workforce reductions in the company’s history.
The company has also attributed the job cuts in part to over-hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic and shifts caused by increased use of AI.
Nearly 10% of the company’s corporate workforce has been affected by these reductions.
The layoffs impact various units including Amazon Web Services, retail, Prime Video and human resources, among others.
The company has not detailed exact numbers by region. Internationally, timing and severance details vary by local requirements.
India has also seen job cuts in recent rounds. Last year, Amazon cut about 800 jobs in the country earlier. Reports indicate that the impact in India from this round may be smaller compared with other markets.
