Russia carried out its deadliest aerial assault on Ukraine’s capital this year, launching a massive overnight barrage of missiles and drones that killed at least 27 people, injured 91 others, and caused widespread destruction across Kyiv.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia fired 74 missiles and 496 drones during the overnight attack, targeting military facilities, energy infrastructure and airports in Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine. The strikes left large sections of the capital blanketed in thick smoke as emergency crews rushed to extinguish fires and search for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
Residential Building Among Worst-Hit Sites
One of the most devastating strikes hit a nine-storey residential apartment building on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River. A missile tore through the structure, destroying 64 apartments and leaving dozens of families displaced.
Rescue teams worked through the rubble for hours in search of survivors while firefighters battled flames that engulfed parts of the building. Officials said nearly 130 buildings across Kyiv suffered damage in the coordinated attack.
Zelenskyy Cuts Short Ireland Visit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cut short his visit to Ireland and returned to Kyiv to inspect the damage firsthand. During his visit to the partially collapsed apartment complex, Zelenskyy blamed delays in the delivery of Western air defence systems for the scale of destruction caused by the Russian assault.
“It is important that our partners not simply stand by and watch as human lives are being destroyed,” Zelenskyy said, renewing his appeal for additional military support.
Ukraine Faces Air Defence Challenges
Ukraine’s Air Force described the overnight bombardment as one of the largest missile and drone attacks in recent months. Officials said the assault included an unusually high number of ballistic missiles, which are more difficult to intercept than cruise missiles or drones.
The Air Force also acknowledged that shortages of Patriot interceptor missiles had reduced Ukraine’s ability to intercept incoming ballistic missiles, making the attack significantly more destructive.
Russia Says Attack Was Retaliation
Moscow defended the strikes, saying they targeted Ukrainian military facilities, energy infrastructure and airports. Russian authorities claimed the operation was carried out in retaliation for recent Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russian territory.
Earlier, Ukraine reportedly struck a major oil refinery in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, prompting Russia to intensify its military response. The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin had been briefed on the operation and indicated that Russia would continue increasing military pressure to achieve its objectives in Ukraine.
International Condemnation
The latest bombardment drew swift condemnation from the international community. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres denounced the attacks, describing them as part of a “deadly pattern” of strikes on populated civilian areas.
Meanwhile, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the EU would propose fresh sanctions against entities supporting Russia’s military-industrial complex in response to the latest escalation.
Conflict Continues to Escalate
The latest attack marks one of the most significant escalations in the Russia-Ukraine war this year, highlighting the growing intensity of long-range missile and drone warfare.
As rescue operations continue in Kyiv, Ukraine is once again urging its Western allies to accelerate deliveries of advanced air defence systems, warning that further delays could lead to even greater civilian casualties in future attacks.
