Politics and political work are not easy jobs, and if you have never been chosen by the party for any leading role, becoming the Chief Minister brings immense pressure. Will he be able to handle it?
Well, this is the story of V D Satheesan, whom no one among the Congress party leaders believed would become CM. He has now been given the Kerala Chief Minister’s seat, not by political leaders, but because the people of Kerala chose him.
Satheesan is known to be different from the usual politicians. He is a politician who enjoys reading books, discussing ideas, and meeting writers and intellectuals. At the Kerala Literature Festival in 2024, he surprised people by having a deep conversation about the famous novel Time Shelter by Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov. This showed that he is not just a politician, but also someone who seriously thinks about culture and society.
But this does not mean the road to reaching this position was easy for him. No, it was not an easy journey. Many times, people expected him to rise to top party positions, but he was ignored. Surprisingly, the people’s most beloved choice for CM had never become KSU chief, Youth Congress leader, or KPCC president. Anyone else might have given up, but he kept working.
Satheesan came from a middle-class family and built his career through hard work. He first lost the Paravur election in 1996, but instead of giving up, he stayed connected with the people and worked in the constituency for five years. In the next election in 2001, he won, and since then, he has never faced defeat in that constituency.
In Kerala, he is respected for speaking honestly and putting forward his thoughts in front of the public on important issues like Kerala’s economy, environmental concerns, and drug abuse. Even people who usually support the Left have slowly started respecting him.
Surprisingly, after the election in Kerala, there was concern that Congress party leaders would choose K C Venugopal as the new CM because he has strong support within the party and is also known to be close to party leader Rahul Gandhi. Many MLAs reportedly backed him as well. But the public had a different person in mind. The people believed Satheesan deserved this post because the election victory was seen as his achievement.
Now Satheesan has become the new Kerala CM, but it is not going to be an easy job. There are big challenges ahead because many within his own party do not fully believe in or support him. Currently, Kerala is facing financial problems, environmental issues, and social concerns. On top of that, although Satheesan has worked for the people, he has never held any ministerial role, meaning he has no executive experience.
At the same time, the BJP is becoming a stronger opposition force in Kerala, making politics more competitive. So now, the big question is: can Satheesan prove himself as a successful leader and keep Congress strong in Kerala for years to come?
